FAQS
Understanding compliance isn’t always easy. At Best Smoke Alarms we have the knowledge and experience you can trust to get the job done right, the first time.
Can domestic smoke alarm legislation be enforced in Queensland?
Yes. The regulatory authority of domestic smoke alarm legislation in Queensland is the Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) , under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990 and the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008.
Does the new legislation affect me?
This new legislation applies to class 1a buildings (ie, houses / townhouses) and class 2 buildings (ie units / apartments). It does not include dwellings such as motels, dormitories, caravans or other buildings.
Does this affect me if I am building my house or unit now?
Yes. All dwellings constructed after 2014 are required to have their smoke alarms interconnected to each other.
Do I need to have a smoke alarm if there are no bedrooms?
Yes. Even if there are no bedrooms on a storey at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
How long does the battery last or how often does the battery need to be changed?
Different alarms have different battery life. We recommend Brooks smoke alarms that have a 10yr lithium ion battery which will last the life of the alarm.
Can I still use battery operated smoke alarms?
From 1 January 2022 for dwellings being leased or sold, or 1 January 2027 for all other dwellings, all battery operated smoke alarms must be 10 year non-removable battery smoke alarms.
When do I need to install more smoke alarms and interconnect them?
From 1 January 2027 for all other dwellings.
What does interconnected mean?
Where do smoke alarms need to be installed in a room?
Should I replace my ionisation smoke alarm now, when it is still functioning well?
We would recommend upgrading your smoke alarms. Ionisation smoke alarms may not operate in time to alert you early enough to escape a smouldering fire. Smouldering fires are the major cause of fatalities in house fires.
Are you smoke alarm compliant? Do you know it’s now the law? Upgrade your smoke alarms today.
From 1 January 2022, landlords must install interconnected smoke alarms in residential rental properties.
